these students were heading to Uyo from Owerri to settle the misunderstanding between the students of University of Uyo which the students had been destroying properties, burning cars and houses for reasons known to them.
It was on their way going exactly in the morning when they met a trailer whose careless driver was trying to over take another car at a sharp bend and in the process left his lane and ran into another lane which the NANS Bus was coming through, before the NANS Driver could know what was happening they were already smashed by the trailer killing five(5) people and leaving the remaining five(5) seriously injured , this happened around Ariam-elu elu community in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia state.
among the dead was the NANS Senate President identified asMr. Donald Onukaogu, who was leading the delegation to Uyo, Onubogu was a student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo state. other four Executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS),were Assah Ejeita from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Duru Jacob, Assistant Secretary General of NANS, Zone B, one Japheth, and another representative of the student’s body whose full name could not be ascertained as at press time.

Abia state Governor, Chief Theodore Orji also paid a condolence visit to these innocent students who lost their lives and the ones injured at the hospital where they were receiving treatment when the report of the accident reached him.
Taking Governor Orji round the casualty ward where the injured students were receiving treatment, Dr. Kalu, a medical doctor in charge of the ward said that the accident victims and the dead were brought to the hospital in the morning(13th june)
Dr. Kalu confirmed that their vehicle was said to have been involved in a head-on collision with a lorry at Ikwuano on their way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
Governor Orji sympathized with Nigerian students over the death of the five union executives.
Orji described the incident as “a calamity and sympathetic” even as he cautioned drivers to be more careful while driving, urging them to always maintain manageable speed limit.
The Governor said that the casualty level would have been minimal if the drivers were not on high speed.
According to him, the incident was disheartening as the victims were the future leaders of the country.
Abia state police command confirmed the incident.
However, the villagers were said to have resisted police from removing the corps from the bus, insisting that government authorities must come to see the deplorable condition of the road.
This morning(14th june), I the Admin of 9JA MUST HEAR THIS went to the F.M.C Umuahia to see and hear from the victims. briefing us, one of the victims when interviewed told me that it was not really the fault of their driver rather it was the trailer driver who left his lane to their own lane in the process of over-taking another car at the sharp bend. comrade Ukwu also made us to understand that they were on their way to negotiate peace when the accident occured.
However, he said that the Governor of Abia State has contributed in consoling them by taking care of their hospital Bill.
we are also pleading to our road users to be very careful while driving because life has no duplicate. at the same time we are also pleading to the Government to do something about that road, that particular place has taken the lives of many people, that place is so sharp that you can never see what is happening ahead of you. and please to our drivers "DO NOT OVER-TAKE AT A SHARP-BEND" .
